F-15 Interesting FactsKeokiDAHL.comThe War on Terror: On September 11, 2001, Air National Guard F-15 units from several states, including the 101st FS from Massachusetts and the 199th out of Hawaii, conducted armed Combat Air Patrols (CAP). They escorted civilian airliners to enforce an FAA stand-down on all commercial air traffic. Two F-15As from the 101st FS were the first fighters on scene over New York City on that fateful morning. Since then, ANG and ACC F-15s routinely patrol the American skies, and are deployed overseas to take an active role in the war on terror.US and Foreign Air Forces:Currently, the F-15 is operated by the air arms of Israel, Japan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, with Singapore to soon follow. The versions utilized are:The Air National Guard:As of January 2008, the ANG has eight F-15 Eagle squadrons. Two of these are in Oregon, one of which is a Fighter Training Squadron, handling conversion training for active duty and ANG squadrons. The other seven Combat-Coded units stand at "Ready Alert" posture keeping two or four armed aircraft ready to scramble at a moment's notice. All of the ANG F-15 squadrons regularly deploy overseas as part of the ongoing AEF cycle (Air/Space Expeditionary Forces structure). With the Active Duty 18th Wing at Kadena AB, Japan, swapping out its early (FY-78) production F-15C/Ds for newer machines, several of these ex-"ZZ" jets are filling the ranks of several of the ANG Eagle operators. McKinley, AlaskaCan you find the clock?In full afterburner, the F-15C (79-078 -- a double MiG killer) of the Oregon Air Guard 173rd Fighter Wing, quickly gets airborne for another training sortie. Oregon's 173rd F.W./114th F.S. based at Kalamath Falls, handles all operational conversion training for the F-15 "Air Superiority" community, including Air Combat Command and the ANG. The wing operates a fairly large assortment of F-15B two-seat trainers, but also flies A, C,& D models as well. This particular F-15C was responsible for the downing of two MiG-21 Fishbeds on 6 February 1991 during Operation Desert Storm, while assigned to the 36th TFW.Former F-15 ANG Squadron:The only Guard unit to give up its F-15 Eagles was the 128th Fighter Squadron, 116th Fighter Wing, Georgia Air National Guard. The 128th FS operated the Eagle for ten years between 1986 and 1996, at which time they converted to a bomber unit.They operated a mix of early FY 73/74/75 aircraft including the very first operational Eagle assigned to Tactical Air Command, an F-15B, 73-0108 also known as "Tac-One."They are now designated as the 128th Bomb Squadron, 116th Bomb Wing.
